Low Risk Solutions

With warehouse prices expected to shoot up in the next few years, many businesses are looking for a lower risk solution…
SHD Logistics posted a story this month which sent shivers down the spines of all facilities managers across the UK- warehouse prices are on the up, again. Many businesses will panic and start to calculate their already growing overhead costs as a result of this, and that is obviously important- however one must also consider the increased risk that comes with making this permanent investment. Spaciotempo’s temporary space helps Nissan’s LEAF to roll off the production line

Nissan has overcome a lack of space at its Sunderland plant by investing in a temporary building, which has allowed it to accommodate the production of its brand new electric LEAF.
The 1,966sqm building, supplied by Spaciotempo UK Ltd, is being used to store finished axles for the company’s Juke and Qashqai models, as well as the LEAF, which started rolling off the production lines at the end of March.
Last year the Sunderland factory, which is one of British manufacturing’s success stories, built more than 510,000 vehicles – a UK car industry record. Its success is the result of heavy investment in new production facilities which now means that space at the 750 acre plant, opened in 1986, is at a premium – which caused a problem when it came to accommodating the LEAF.
Darrell Stansfield, senior engineer at Nissan Sunderland plant, said: “Five years ago we extended the axle plant to accommodate Qashqai production but in order to increase production further we needed to find further space to install two new welding lines.
“We decided we would use the space currently used to store the axles, which meant we needed to find somewhere else to keep them in turn. We considered two options: an extension to the existing plant or storing the parts off-site, neither of which proved suitable.”
Darrell was aware that some of Nissan’s contractors used temporary buildings at Sunderland and contacted Spaciotempo to find out more.
He said: “I knew that it wouldn’t take long to erect and could prove to be a cost-effective option.”
In both cases, Darryl was proved right and within weeks the aluminium-framed temporary building, which was installed on a specially made concrete base, was in place.
To ensure that it fitted in with Nissan’s development policy of dividing the plant’s floor-space into 18m span bays, the temporary building’s 1,944sqm framework was created in bespoke six metre sections, rather than Spaciotempo’s standard five metres.
Scott Jameson, director of sales at Spaciotempo, said: “Having already supplied a number of Nissan’s contractors, we are very pleased to have been able to provide Nissan with extra, tailor-made storage capacity.
“Expansion is excellent news for a company, but running out of room can be a real problem, because of the cost of building new facilities, re-locating or storing stock elsewhere.
“However, if the company has a spare patch of land, a temporary building can solve these problems at a fraction of the cost, with a minimum of disruption and within a matter of weeks.”

Planning Permission for Temporary Buildings

If you are looking to get planning before you have your temporary building installed then you should know that it usually takes a minimum of 4 weeks, however it can take longer depending on the planning meeting dates. Local authorities are often extremely helpful when applying for planning permission for temporary buildings as they believe that requiring a temporary building indicates your business is growing. For more information on planning permission for a temporary building structure and how we can help you, visit us online.

Spaciotempo’s temporary building helps Vinci to get on track in Nottingham

Engineers building a multi-million pound extension to Nottingham’s tram system now have somewhere to store construction equipment and materials after investing in one of our temporary buildings.

Vinci Construction has purchased a 600sqm single-skin Neivalu temporary building in order to house lengths of track and the metalwork used to hold the overhead cables - as well as provide office space – while the company builds the 17.5km line, which is set to be completed towards the end of next year.

The temporary building measures 90m from gable to gable and although the original plan was to erect in a flat, level site, a change of plan saw it located on a site that rose very slightly at one end.

Such an elevation, although minimal, would require extensive groundwork to accommodate a similar sized permanent structure, but it caused no significant problems for us when erecting the temporary structure and Vinci was able to move into its new facility in under two weeks.

Scott Jameson, director of sales at Spaciotempo, said: “By purchasing the building, Vinci will enjoy the flexibility of having a purpose-built facility that can be moved around the site to meet future needs, or can be dismantled and erected elsewhere.

“The Neivalu is a quality building that is more than capable of meeting Vinci’s needs in Nottingham over the next few years and for many years afterwards.”

Spaciotempo’s temporary buildings help RSRL to decommission historic Harwell

Hundreds of bags of material arising from demolition work at a site that once played a key part in the development of Britain’s atomic energy programme are being safely kept in dry storage in two temporary buildings that we have supplied. The temporary buildings, which provide 1,975sqm of space and have steel cladding walls and single skin PVC roofs, have been installed to aid the decommissioning and demolition process at the former Harwell research facility, near Didcot in Oxfordshire. Logistics MD set to help Spaciotempo UK present its case at IMHX 2013

The managing director of a logistics firm which invested in a temporary building in order to win a contract with a potential value of £1m will take to the stage at the forthcoming IMHX 2013 exhibition to explain how they can enable companies to expand their businesses.

Fiona Strong, who runs Ark-H, in Wilstead, Bedfordshire, will talk about how securing the extra capacity quickly helped her company; when we present a paper during a case study conference being held at IMHX's Logistics case study theatre on Day Four of the exhibition, which takes place at the NEC from March 19.

Ark-H invested in one of our temporary buildings last year after reaching the capacity of its 12,000sqm storage facility in autumn. Erected in just nine days on a spare patch of land at the firm's HQ, the 1,000sqm building gave Ark-H space for 650 pallets, allowing it to take on a lucrative contract to store vital festive marketing material for a new client. Bradford College Boxing Gym

Boasting three boxing rings, a full range of
hitting equipment, mirrors and weights the
hall has proved popular with young boxers.
The Academy has become one of a handful
designated High Performance Boxing
Centres across the UK It will also act as a
pre-Games training base for a number of
Olympic boxing teams.

It is, in short, a significant addition to
Yorkshire’s sporting scene and a proud
example of the London 2012 legacy, yet it
quite easily might never have ever got off
the ground.

Just a year ago, the Academy was dividing
its time between four venues operated by
other organisations. It had a long waiting
list, limited funding and, with the Olympics
fast approaching, little chance to take part.

Constructed using an anodised aluminium
frame in-filled with steel-clad sandwich
panels, the hall was manufactured and
supplied by us and, although it could
theoretically be removed as easily as it has
been erected, it is designed to last for many
years. It is manufactured to comply with
British and EEC safety standards for
structural integrity, fire and safety codes, as
well as British Standards for wind and snow
loading.

We laid the concrete base, installed a
semi-translucent roof, which allows in
daylight to save lighting costs, and fitted a
host of other amenities, including a
temperature control system. The whole cost
of the project was £300,000 which,
according to figures from Sport England,
shows a significant saving. The average cost
of a similar-sized sports hall, based on
typical schemes funded last year, would be
around the £1m mark – more than three
times as expensive.
